《说文解字》是我国第一部以六书理论系统地分析字形、说解字义、考辨声读的字典。学习篆书，从掌握五百四十建部首入手，是打开《说文解字》的钥匙。古代称部首为字源，它统辖全书，每一部和部内的字体大都在意义上“共理相贯”。掌握了部首，即是掌握了古文字义、字形结构最核心的机要，可谓执简驭繁，事半功倍。

吴大澂，清代文字学家，江苏吴县人，精于古文字学，著有《说文部首》、《字说》、《说文古籀补》等文字学著作多部，在字学上颇具创见。其书写的小篆《540说文部首》，字形工整规范，更适合初学者的临习。

吴大澂精于篆书，但不止步于小篆唯美、飘逸的装饰美，更重视文字起源最初的形态，和古人在创造文字过程要表达的真实想法与智慧。他对金石文字精深的研究，开拓了对先秦文字的广阔视野，使他的篆书从中汲取了不少营养。从他的小篆《说文部首》学起，不但是书法艺术，更重在学问，是书法入门的上佳之选，也是篆书结构的门径。若是学篆不去识篆，就如同只知道一个人其形，而不得其内涵，那就算不得真正的了解，只是在依葫芦画瓢罢了。
